Call for Cayman chefs to compete

The 2012 Cayman Cookout starts here – with a call out for talented chefs on island to compete in the famous Cook-off contest.

The cook-off is open to Caymanian and local residents and only non-professionals can participate – this also applies to ex-pros and retired pros. Ultimately the two finalists will compete in front of a panel of celebrity judges during the 2012 Cayman Cookout Bon Vivant Champagne Brunch on Sunday, 15 January, 2012, from noon to 3pm to decide the winner of the Cayman Cookout Bon Vivant Cook-Off Series. The winner’s grand prize is a trip for two to the Food & Wine Best New Chef Event in New York City, with airfare provided by Cayman Airways, hotel by Ritz-Carlton and a lunch at the world-famous Le Bernardin. “We are once again thrilled to launch the call for the Bon Vivant Cook-Off Series Cheftestant applicants for this October,” said Frederic Morineau, executive head chef, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

“The talent we uncover during the Cook-Off Series clearly shows why Cayman is the culinary epicentre of the Caribbean. It’s such a fun competition with such an enticing twist –cooking in front of your culinary heroes (Eric Ripert, Jose Andres and Anthony Bourdain) at one of Cayman Cookout’s signature events. The Cook-Off Series truly places Cayman’s amateur culinary talent on an international stage.” The first rounds take place at Bon Vivant on Tuesday, 28 and Wednesday, 29 November from 4pm onwards. Applications will be accepted from 1st to 31st October and contestants announced on Thursday, 10 November. Submissions must include an entree recipe based on four portions, containing some local/Caribbean ingredient and be accompanied by a picture of the proposed recipe fully cooked and plated.

A panel of local restaurateurs and chefs will choose eight finalists, based on recipe originality, use of local ingredients and plate presentation. Each cook-off will feature two contestants cooking concurrently in front of a live audience and panel of judges. There will be 15 minutes allowed for organising and preparing the cooking area and 45 for dish execution.
