Fashion for the fairway

It’s not always easy to find the right gift for a man, whatever part of the world you find yourself in. On a small island with limited shopping facilities, it can be even harder. But in the heart of the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman resort, discreetly tucked away, is a store that may just hold the solution.

The Blue Tip Golf Shop (whose name and blue shark fin logo is a play on golf-course designer Greg Norman’s nickname “the shark”) is the only fully stocked golf shop in the Cayman Islands and welcomes residents as well as guests of the resort. This unique store offers everything the golf enthusiast might desire, as well as plenty for the non-golfer.

In anticipation of Fathers Day on 19 June, the Blue Tip Golf Shop is holding a special sale on the preceding weekend, 11-12 June. A cabana will be set up outside the store from 10am to 2pm, where some excellent bargains can be picked up with discounts of 50 per cent or more being offered on cabana items. In addition, residents will be offered the chance to substitute US$ prices for marked CI$ prices on all items inside the store, amounting to a 20 per cent discount.

Golfers will find an extensive selection of golf shirts and shorts, many bearing the Ritz-Carlton or Blue Tip logos, plus others with no logo, and all made from cool, breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics in pale colours. Men’s golf attire includes top brands such as Nike, Adidas and the Greg Norman collection.

Women will find golf wear from EP Pro, Nike and Adidas, as well as workout gear from Adidas and Under Armour.

But if you thought golf-wear was all stiff, starched whites and respectably muted tones, the Loudmouth line will quickly change that impression. Men’s shorts and women’s skirts positively shout fun fashion, with the brightest, boldest prints, patterns and patchworks imaginable. Loudmouth clothing in all its colourful glory rivals any surf label for young, trendy sports wear. While it is perfectly appropriate attire for the golf course, it is equally well suited to every day fashion.

For those who prefer a more subtle look with softer colours and patterns, a collection of high end Bugatchi woven dress shirts for men are a stylish alternative. Beautifully tailored with inner cuff and collar details, the shirts are available in a variety of striped, plaid, checkered and plain fabrics.

Golf balls, clubs and bags are also in stock, including a new line of Taylor Made irons, drivers and fairway woods. Other brands can also be ordered upon request.

Other accessories for sale include Oakley and Costa del Mar sunglasses, Reef sandals, golf shoes, embroidered caps, socks and golf-specific gadgets for marking one’s tee and repairing turf.

Unique to the Blue Tip Golf Shop is the specially designed Blue Iguana head covers for golf clubs. The staff of the Blue Tip store commissioned these head covers as something exclusive to Blue Tip and to the Cayman Islands. Although they may look more like a bright blue, iguana-shaped soft toy (and indeed children treat them as puppets) the head of the club rests inside the iguana’s belly, amply protected by the surrounding stuffing and fabric. Priced at $40 apiece, $5 from each item sold goes towards a blue iguana adoption fund. $1000 dollars has already been raised and donated, making these great gift items for both kids and serious golfers whilst also representing a way to give back to the community.

The Blue Tip Golf Shop is easily accessible with a parking area directly in front of it and is open 365 days a year from 7am to 6pm.
