Destination weddings have never been more popular, and so Napa Valley wineries are considering allowing couples to marry within their wineries as a way to increase profits in these cash-strapped times.
A two-year trial is being proposed until March 2012, i.e. an expansion to the size of events currently permitted under local by-laws.
This may be an uphill struggle as California’s Napa County has some of the strictest controls over winery events of any wine-growing region. The area is primarily agricultural, which goes against idea of large-scale events such as weddings.
The Napa Valley Vintners, whose membership includes about 350 wineries, is currently debating the issue, while the Napa County Board of Supervisors was scheduled to discuss the issue last month during a joint session with the Napa County Planning Commission.
