Every bride should feel beautiful

Tips, trends and advice from an experienced wedding celebrant and planner.

Each year more than 1,000 couples get married in the Cayman Islands.  Visitor, resident, big, small, low budget, high end, DIY, whatever type of wedding, there is nothing that will get a woman’s heart racing like thoughts of a wedding.

I have been involved in the wedding industry for the past 15 years, for the last four years as a full-time Civil Registrar of Marriages, or the local name, Marriage Officer.

This month I launch my new column in which I will write about weddings past, present and future, what’s hot, what’s not; in what I hope will be an insider’s guide to weddings for the busy couple.  As an additional feature, each month I will answer a few questions on a wedding related topic.  Just write to me at [email protected], and put “question” in the subject line.  No last names please, or be creative in your signature.

These days over 90 per cent of brides use the internet to plan their wedding.  Many use the various bridal magazines, on- line forums and blogs, but word of mouth is also important as brides share with their friends what worked for them.  There are many internet wedding planning tools available.  This month I am recommending www.bridepros.com.  This will help you keep your thoughts organised, and I hope that this column will help you fill in some of the blanks as you plan for your special day.

Did you know that the most important item on the bride’s agenda is “the dress”?

(I am not counting “the ring”, which usually comes before the dress). By the time you read this I will have paid a visit to Kleinfeld’s Bridal in Manhattan, just so I can write about it in another column).

Of course you can check out Kleinfeld’s Bridal on TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress”.  Randy Fenoli, Fashion Director of Kleinfeld’s who can be seen on the TV show was in Cayman recently for the Engage 09! Something Blue, a luxury wedding summit held at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.  Randy shared some of the latest dress trends in New York, and told us a little known fact about Kleinfelds – they carry dresses for every size bride, up to Size 32!  Every bride should feel beautiful on her wedding day, inside and out.

Until next month,

Joy Basdeo, a Civil Registrar of Marriages and Notary Public, who also runs a full-service wedding business, Simply Weddings
