Track boats, people with SPOT GPS tracking devices

An alarming increase in boat thefts in recent months has highlighted the need to protect one’s assets, even when safely tied to the dock. Chains and padlocks may deter some would-be boat thieves, but it’s an unsightly and laborious way to ensure your boat is safe. A simple GPS tracking device installed on one’s boat is a discreet, cost-effective and efficient way to ensure that you know where your boat is at all times. Harbour House Marina stocks the SPOT Hug device, specifically designed for boats, as well as the SPOT 2 and SPOT Connect personal devices.

The SPOT Hug is a GPS tracking device that can be installed discreetly on boats and will alert the boat owner and other parties of any kind of unauthorised movement.

The SPOT Hug consists of a tracker with a built-in GPS and satellite transmitter, a wireless keypad and a key fob.

It works by creating a ‘virtual security perimeter’ around the vessel. When the key fob enters the security perimeter, the device is automatically disarmed. If, however, the boat moves outside of the perimeter without the presence of the key fob, an automatic alert is transmitted every five minutes, sending updated GPS locations to the Asset Monitoring Centre, which notifies the boat owner and authorities, where available.

The SPOT Hug can also be connected to four monitoring sensors for low battery, high bilge water, engine/ignition or other external contacts. A message is sent to the owner and other listed contacts daily with the boat’s location and sensor notifications with detailed information.

Additional functions of the SPOT Hug include an SOS function that will alert emergency services with your GPS location in the event of a life threatening emergency.

A Help Function for non-life threatening situations will notify personal contacts that you need assistance. You may also check in with the OK function to let friends and family know that all is well and send your GPS location.

Measuring just four by four inches, the device is small and unobtrusive, yet rugged and waterproof. It can run on AA lithium batteries or can be wired up to a 12 or 24 volt external battery. Harbour House Marina technicians will take care of the installation of the device in a discreet location.

Competitively priced when viewed alongside alternative tracking devices, the SPOT Hug is available from Harbour House Marina for $449.95.

SPOT Connect

Today’s smartphones provide a level of social connectivity far beyond what we could have imagined just a few years ago. However, you don’t have to venture far off the beaten track – or out to sea – before you loose cell phone coverage. The SPOT Connect, however, can keep you in touch with friends, family, and emergency personnel even when you are ‘off the grid’.

All you need to do is download the SPOT app and pair your smartphone with SPOT Connect via Bluetooth and you’ll be connected to a global satellite network that lets you send messages and GPS coordinates from virtually anywhere on the planet.

Even when there is no cell phone signal, you will still be able to send short emails, text messages and tweets. Additional functions include an SOS emergency assistance request sent, which will be repeated every five minutes, along with your current GPS location, and a Help Request function that will alert up to 10 contacts via SMS and email every five minutes that you need assistance. An OK function lets your contacts know that all is well and friends and family can also follow your movements on Google Maps or SPOT Adventure Pages with the Track Progress function. There is also a custom email and text message function that enables you to send messages of up to 41 characters describing your situation.

Available from Harbour House Marina for $149.95.

SPOT 2

The ideal safety accessory for those with a thirst for adventure, the SPOT 2 is a personal satellite GPS messenger. Keep the lines of communication open with friends and family, and put their minds at rest when you are out of range.

Using 100 per cent satellite technology, SPOT works virtually anywhere in the world, even where cell phones don’t. As with other SPOT devices the SPOT 2 is equipped with SOS, Help, OK and custom message functions to give you peace of mind when in inhospitable and remote places as well as keeping those at home updated on your whereabouts.

Available from Harbour House Marina for $149.95.
