The Legends tennis tournament is at the Ritz-Carlton this month and the draw throws up some interesting matches in the first round.
The tournament runs from 17-19 November. In the men’s singles, Wayne Ferreira faces the Cayman wildcard Panav Jha and Jimmy Arias takes on Thomas Blake.
Most of the visiting pros are in the mixed doubles. In the first round, Martina Hingis and Mark Philippoussis take on Tennis Federation wildcard entrants David Berry and a Cayman amateur. Steven Capriati (Jennifer’s brother) and Milagros Sequera are matched against Ashley Fisher and Ashley Harkelroad. Chanda Rubin and Murphy Jensen will play a Cayman Pro and Cayman amateur.
Jennifer Capriati and Stephen Huss face the entrants from the Ritz-Carlton wildcard, Thomas Neuert and Racquel Kops.
This year’s event will feature the attendance of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who will be the keynote speaker at the opening dinner.
“The biggest announcement this year that really underpins the crossover between sports, tourism and our finance sector is combining the event with having a great world leader and speaker coming down as part of the event,” said Mike Ryan, developer and owner of the Ritz-Carlton, during a press conference to announce details of the event.
The title sponsor of the event is KPMG, with presenting sponsor The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and main sponsor the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism. Gold sponsors for the event include Cayman Financial Review, Taittinger Champagne, Maples, The Security Centre, Balaclava Jewellers and Cayman Airways.
