Grand Cayman will play host to some of the legends of world tennis in November when the KPMG Legends Tennis Tournament makes its return to The Courts at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
This year’s event will feature the attendance of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who will be the keynote speaker at the opening dinner.
“The biggest announcement this year that really underpins the crossover between sports, tourism and our finance sector is combining the event with having a great world leader and speaker coming down as part of the event,” said Mike Ryan, developer and owner of the Ritz-Carlton, during a press conference to announce details of the event.
Premier McKeeva Bush said that the addition of Blair to the event was a very positive move for the Cayman Islands.
“Congratulations on gaining the participation of Tony Blair. Such a distinguished guest speaker can only add another dimension and prestige to an already celebrated event,” said Mr. Bush.
The headlining players for the 2011 edition of the event will be Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati, who will take part in the mixed doubles section of the tournament. The event will also see the return of a number of familiar faces, with Jimmy Arias, Mark Philippoussis and Wayne Ferreira all returning.
The premier thanked Ryan for bringing the event to Cayman and in so doing bringing positive press to the Islands.
“Thank you for having the vision and the passion to bring Legends Tennis to the Cayman Islands. Not only have you brought the stars of tennis to the Cayman Islands, you have made the event accessible to just about everyone who wishes to enjoy a great tennis match. You make it possible for whole families to enjoy this event and stimulate the interest of youngsters in this fantastic sport,” he said.
Blair will be the keynote speaker at the opening dinner on Wednesday, 16 November, at Blue by Eric Ripert at the Ritz-Carlton. Tickets for the dinner are being offered as part of the tournament’s Pro-Am package.
The first round matches will follow on Thursday, 17 November, with the semi-finals on Friday, 18 November. The finals on Saturday, 19 November will be followed by the festive Whites Party.
